In accordance with the UGC (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women Employees and Students in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, as well as the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, the Internal Committee (IC) is hereby constituted as follows to address complaints pertaining to sexual harassment in the workplace:

VIT IS BOUND BY THE LAW AGAINST SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF WOMEN AT WORKPLACE
Based on the Vishakha Guidelines, 1997, of the Supreme Court, Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 was passed. The purpose of this legislation is to create workplace environment for women that is free from any form of sexual harassment. This aims to ensure a robust mechanism for the prevention and redressal of sexual harassment incidents within our institution.
We comply with all the requirements under the Act.
Who can approach Internal Committee for help?
Any female employee (teaching/non-teaching faculty, student ) of VIT or any female, who is not from VIT but has experienced the harassment, perchance, on the campus.
Penal consequences of sexual harassments of women at workplace (prevention, prohibition and redressal) act, 2013
Punishments prescribed in the POSH Act:
- Punishment prescribed under the service rules of the organization.
- Punishment like withholding of promotion, increments, etc. The committee can also decide to terminate the employment.
- Punishment could also be deduction of compensation payable to the aggrieved woman from the wages of the respondent.
- In case if the false or malicious complaint is filed, the Committee can take disciplinary action against them.
Punishments under Indian Penal Code:
- Outraging the modesty of woman [354]:
- An Assault or use of criminal force to any woman.
- Intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely to outrage the modesty.
- Punishable with an imprisonment for a term extending to five years and shall also be liable for fine.
- Sexual Harassment by Man [354A]:
- Physical contact and advances;
- Demand or request for sexual favours;
- Showing pornography against the will of a woman;
- Making sexually coloured remarks.
- Punishable with a punishment of an rigorous imprisonment for a term of three years and shall also be liable for fine.
- Stalking [354D]:
- Following a woman and contacting or attempting to contact such woman despite a clear indication of disinterest, or
- Monitors the use by a woman of internet, email or any other form of electronic communication.
- Punishable with an imprisonment for a term upto three years and shall also be liable for fine.
- Insulting the modesty of a woman [509]:
- Any action including sounds, gestures, exhibiting any object with an intent to insult her modesty.
- Punishable offence with an imprisonment upto three years and shall also be liable for fine.
